A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such drugs need to be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
