Sports Champions Urge on Iran to Prevent Death Sentence of Boxing Star

Over twenty Olympic medallists, mentors and additional international athletes have signed a statement urging a stop to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is on death row in Iran.

Growing International Outrage

Amid increasing worldwide anger over Iran’s expanding employment of executions as a means of oppression, the powerfully expressed statement censures the authorities's ruling to maintain the capital punishment of the boxing champion.

Vafaei Sani, thirty, from the city in north-east Iran, was taken into custody for taking part in national uprisings in two thousand nineteen and accused of aiding an opposition group. He has spent 60 months in incarceration, where he has been tortured and confined in seclusion.

“Competition is meant to encourage hope, unity, and courage,” the signatories expressed. “The capital punishment of a winner for his opinions is a clear violation on these principles and a admonition to all sportspeople who ventures to speak out.

Record of Executing Competitors

The statement said that Vafaei Sani’s case was not an isolated one and underscored the country's history of executing athletes for their views, for example a football captain, leader of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, Navid Afkari, a young national sports titleholder, faced the death penalty.

Further supporters to the appeal consist of a sailing champion, who captained the first female-only team in a global yacht race and was the first woman to receive a prestigious yachting trophy; the former skipper of the soccer side Craig Foster; and a sports figure, who was in the Iranian squad for the international competition.

Arrest and Flawed Legal Process

The athlete was detained in March 2020. The charges against him included “causing deterioration on Earth through fire-setting and ruin of government belongings”. His verdict has been overturned twice but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third occasion. His legal proceedings was denounced as “highly unjust” by human rights activists and bodies.

Call to International Body

The appeal to halt the athlete's death sentence is subsequent to a previous appeal to the United Nations official for freedoms, backed by over a hundred human rights experts and groups, calling for action to prevent the competitor's capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge

Based on findings, there is an “execution crisis in the nation, which has attained shocking proportions”.
